Many organizations avoid internal competition at all costs. They want people to cooperate and get along! Why create a sense of negativity by encouraging competition? The reason for competition is that it is the natural state of things. Admit it, you jostle your way to the front when waiting for your boarding group to be called on an airplane. You try to have the best BBQ in the neighborhood. Your kids cupcakes at the 2nd grade holiday party looked just a little bit better than the others. Competition is natural, and it brings out the best in us when it is managed.

Look to any great performer, and they relish the arena. No one gets better in isolation. They need teammates to collaborate, challenge and compete with for the spoils, even if that is just pride and self satisfaction.
